- Chevy Drag Racing 1955-1980: A Celebration of Bowtie's Success at the Drag Strip
Relive the glorious first 25 years of Chevy drag racing in this comprehensive and nostalgic history.
With the introduction of Chevy's OHV V-8 in 1955, the brand's domination on the drag strip immediately snowballed. Drag racers loved the compact V-8. It was lightweight, revved high, and responded like no other engine previously produced. Chevy saw a record year in sales in 1955, thanks to a combination of a restyled body and the new mill. It was the age of ingenuity, and those who could get their hands on the new engine were swapping it into engine bays that once housed other weaker mills. Ford's flathead, one that had dominated for so long, was rendered obsolete almost overnight.
Chevy had a winner and dominated the sales charts for years to come. Aftermarket manufacturers got on board and offered all the go-fast goodies needed to make Chevy a winner, no matter what category they ran. From Dragsters to Stock, Chevy's success was immediate. And it was a long-term success, thanks to a combination of years of great styling and a vast array of driveline combinations.
Accomplished racing author Doug Boyce takes a celebratory look at those years of success, with a focus on the first 25 years (1955 through 1980). Chevrolets gave rise to such stars as Bill Grumpy Jenkins, Jungle Jim Liberman, Sneaky Pete Robinson, "Dyno Don" Nicholson, Sox & Martin, Dick Harrell, Dave Strickler, and many more. World champs and fan favorites all drove Chevys. The success showed in the record books. No brand has won more races and events or has set more national records than Chevrolet. And unlike the other manufacturers, Ford and Chrysler, it was done with little to no factory support.
Whether you are a hardcore Chevy fan or just love catching up on the history of drag racing during the golden age, this nostalgic look at Chevy racing history is sure to entertain for hours on end.

When Zora Arkus Duntov petitioned Chevrolet management to make available performance parts for its new generation of V8 engines to compete with Ford and Chrysler he set in motion a critical mass revolution that led to an explosion of racing activity for Chevrolet owners. In short order, Chevrolet cars and V8 engines began dominating the nation's drag strips in an unprecedented movement largely dominated by amateur racers and weekend warriors. Celebrated author and historian Doug Boyce has accurately and succinctly portrayed the incredible momentum of this movement which, in many ways, fostered the emergence of a multi-billion dollar aftermarket parts industry to further support their efforts. While Chevrolet launched the revolution with basic performance parts, they also counted on the innovation of amateur racers to develop and campaign the packages that ran roughshod over the competition. In large measure Chevrolet V8s lent themselves handily to performance modifications, and the small blocks in particular were lightweight, high revving and easy to build. Ford and Chrysler countered with Hemis and performance built big blocks, but the ease of modifying Chevrolet V8's became an insurmountable obstacle. Boyce details the rise of drag racing legends such as Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins "Sneaky Pete" Robinson, Dick Harrell, Dave Strickler and thousands more.

In his typically thorough fashion, Boyce reacquaints the reader with the actual racers in the trenches who drove this relentless march of Chevrolet performance. These competitors bred the massive fields of of Stock, Super Stock and Modified Eliminator cars that formed the "little guy" backbone of drag racing from 1955 through 1980 and all the way to present day. With a fabulous display of color and B&W photos. He introduces you to racers you may have long forgotten and reminds you of all their remarkable contributions to the sport we all know and love. And all of it brought to us by the extraordinarily simple and easy to modify architecture of small and big block Chevrolet engines and, of course, the W engines as well. This book is not a picture skimmer as the text and captions draw you in to learn more about all the fantastic cars you will see. You "will" read the whole thing and return again and again to enjoy the powerful and colorful images and history of Chevrolet drag racing. Another great presentation by one of drag racing's best historians. -

Doug Boyce

Doug Boyce has had a life-long addiction to drag racing. He turned his first wrench at age 8 and attended his first race at age 10. The essence of burning rubber and screaming open pipes filled his head and by his early teens, he was elbow deep in building classic Chevys. He continued to fuel the fire while working 9 to 5 in the automotive field. Doug has filled what little spare time he has had writing numerous club and magazine articles related to drag racing's golden years. He has an ongoing love of drag racing and the way it used to be. He is the author of Grumpy's Toys, Junior Stock, Drag Racing's Quarter Mile Warriors: Then & Now, 1001 Drag Racing Facts, and Match Race Mayhem, all best-selling CarTech titles.
